Jacobsweg Day 32 Schwabach to Obererlbach-17.8 miles

Nadine

We left Schwabach with some light rain in the forecast but with a nice cool day ahead.

Today was full of fun surprises, interesting people and sightings, a lovely cup of tea, and beautiful surroundings!  17+ miles of walking was enough but not bad. A favorite thing today was being shown through the Bicycle Museum by the owner.  He was knowledgeable and passionate about his hobby and very kind.

In 1817, Baron Carl von Drais invented the first steerable walking machine: the “Draisine.” There’s nothing new under the sun. Today we call these balance bikes!

Here are a few additional random pictures from the day.

Late in the morning we passed by a shack that evoked my curiosity. I’m so glad I went up to investigate. It was a Protestant chapel. It was so simple and beautiful inside (a pleasant change from all the gilded baroque churches we’ve visited).

As usual, we snacked on berries most of the day.

But passing some fields we noticed some left over new potatoes asparagus so we tried those too. (Yes, both are good raw).

We had considered staying at a cool youth hostel located are Wenfels Castle. But we gagged at the price of 150Euro for a you hostel. Unreal. We passed by before reaching our more modest accommodation and it did indeed look pretty impressive.

Allison here.

Today was a good day. We were all in good spirits, and the path was gentle. After some time off it is nice to gently increase the miles on relatively flat terrain. I am grateful for small blessings.

We saw tobacco plants growing and were shocked at their height. The tobacco plants in North Carolina are much shorter and the leaves are darker. A local farmer was kind enough to chat with us. He explained the tobacco he grows is very mild compared to the type we are familiar with.

Apparently we have entered horse country. There are some very large training centers we passed today. We even got to watch a couple of riders and horses practice. That made the morning fun.

Of course I will share all the animal pictures because that is what I do.

Our lodging was easy to find which is always a good thing at the end of the day. Showers at the end of a long hiking day are fabulous. Then you add a satisfying meal and we are just about ready for bed…even if it is only 9:30 pm.

That small chapel looked so nice and peaceful. I think I would have liked to sit there for a nice quiet time.

The girls enjoyed the pictures of all the animals today. They were especially tickled by the pink plastic pools in the background of the alpaca and sheep pics – because we have the same one!

    1. The text says that he “gave us the music and the words” so unless that is poetic I’d say he did.
Bonhoeffer is a wonderful/tragic story. I read his “Letters from Prison” and it was intriguing.

Yes, Bonhoeffer stood up to the wrongs inflicted on the Jewish people at that time. He paid dearly with his life at a young age. I suggest you read Eric Metaxis’s book on Bonhoeffer. I learned a lot about the man and his principles.

Yes, Bonhoeffer is an interesting person who stood against the persecution of the Jews, even until his own early death. I suggest you read sometime Eric Metaxis’ book on Bonhoeffer. It’s long, but fascinating with so much detail into the man. I learned a lot.
