First, before you read further, we are all fine.
Next. We were happy to get on the road this morning, just not in the way we’d expected.
Our morning packing and breakfast preparation was underway when Nadine decided to empty the dishwasher in the nice apartment we had in Nürnberg for our rest day.
The door was stiff but the handle was loose. A sharp tug and BANG the whole front panel of the dishwasher was in Nadine’s hand before banging onto the floor. After the second of shock, Nadine said “Ow!” The door had come off and bopped her in the jaw. There was some pain but the biggest deal was her lower jaw was slightly misaligned so her teeth didn’t mesh exactly.
After a few minutes it became clear that a hospital visit was called for to make sure there was nothing serious. Here in Germany, the way to do that is an ER visit at the local hospital. So we called an Uber and we were on the road – in an Uber!
Negotiating a foreign ER is always an adventure. Good news is that this is now my third visit to an ER while on a pilgrimage. The first was 2014 when we were concerned that Allison may have developed stress fractures on her painful leg. The second was my brother’s incident in Portugal. I guess it’s not a good sign that I’m getting “good” at this.
Most things are different in this German Hospital. After finding the actual ER (which wasn’t obvious and took standing at an info counter for a few minutes while the single attendant was on the phone).
Next was getting triaged and then visiting the “admitting” department (“admitting” being the wrong word, but I’m not sure what else they call it here).
Next was sitting alone outside the exam room for about 30min (not bad at all).
Then Nadine got an initial exam by a doc and med student.

An X-ray was ordered as expected. Then back waiting outside the exam room to be called for X-ray. So far everything had been pretty painless (well except for Nadine’s jaw).
Finally we were seen by the doc again who gave the good news of no breaks So…that was our adventure for the morning. 7:00am-Noon.
The rest of the afternoon was ours to chill and that we did. We had a lunch and then went out for a supermarket ice cream.
Tomorrow we will have a reboot, but Nadine is now banned from using any dishwasher we come across.

Nadine, Nadine, Nadine. I’m not even sure there’s a joke to speak into this mouthful you’ve bitten off. I know your goal on this trip was sightseeing, but this is rather extreme! Glad all is well and the jaw is falling back into alignment. Prayers.
