Jakobsweg Day25 Baunach-Bamberg 11.2mi

Today was supposed to be an easy 7.5mi day but there must have been a miscalculation, not by much but still, when your two hour walk becomes a 3-1/2hr walk it’s disappointing! To be fair, the 11.2 from today’s vlog title includes a walk around the historic city.

Leaving Baunach after a huge, but expensive breakfast involved a climb (no surprise here). We stayed mostly in the shade along woodland paths for a large part of the morning.

Just before crossing the Main (pronounced “mine”) river we stepped into the sun.

Once we hit the extensive suburbs however only buildings would provide shade, but we made a valiant effort to crisscross through traffic to grab any bit of possible relief from the 98deg heat.

Bamberg itself is beautiful with a medieval and renaissance area. We made our way across the Ober Brücke (bridge) site of the famous and highly photographed Altes Rathaus and to our lodging for the night (above an Italian restaurant complete with accordion player).

To our delight, we were able to self-check-in early.

It was too early for the shower and laundry routine so, after eating a sandwich and chips that we’d bought at a grocery store, we headed out for a quick tour.

First up was to try the local special Rauchbier. It is made with grain roasted on an open fire and so it is very very smoky. It’s a unique experience.

Rauchbier and Weizenrauchbier

Our next adventure was during our attempt to see the Rose Gardens. The “easy” way up was blocked off for construction and our attempts to “do it anyway” was a fun and funny experience. We considered jumping the barrier, sneaking through an apartment and/or office building, and even (humorously) borrowing a ladder we’d past earlier and using it to scale the wall separating us from our goal.

In the end, we took a long detour that passed by a convent that is now an old folks home. Along the way we met two Londoners (Steve and Nadia).

The convent was undergoing major renovation and was also closed so, after looping around we passed by St Jakobus Church (also closed).

A little lower in the city we finally found an entrance to the rose garden. It was a peaceful place but the roses had suffered from the sun and so they were not healthy.

Across from the gardens was the Bamberger Dom (cathedral). It was open and we dodged inside for some cool air and a tour.

Inside the stark church were two relics (see FAQ section) , the collar bone of a bishop and one of the “true nails” of the crucifixion.

One of my favorite things about the villages and cities are the church bells.  Bamberg has several churches and it’s beautiful to hear them all chiming at one time.

I tried the Rauchbier and I liked it better than I thought I might.  It helped that it was really cold!

Mark told you about our detour in Bamberg because of construction and barricades around buildings. He and Nadine were scheming ways to climb up walls, over walls, and even borrowing a ladder. I was getting worried I would have to bail them out of jail.

We finally made our way to the rose garden which would have been stunning in the spring. However even the remaining roses were wilting in the extreme heat. There were a few survivors.

We need our tour with a photo op of the Uber Brücke. There we met two college students from Korea. They told us their names but I didn’t write them down and forgot. Maybe they will see this post and share their names in the comments.

“Hi” future engineers from Korea!!

Our last adventure of the day was going to the grocery for a cheap dinner and struggling with the heat in our rooms. It’s 8:14pm here and 94 inside the room. Yuck. Luckily the Italian restaurant downstairs just closed and they promised to bring up a fan.

Early start tomorrow. GNight!!

The girls think it’s hilarious that it’s your “bedtime” when it’s just mid afternoon here.

The 94 degree room makes me think of that summer we camped near Busch Gardens and it was SO hot! Hopefully you are all able sleep despite the heat.

Does this comment show my name? (hi, it’s me, your eldest daughter) I thought I changed the randomly generated username, but wanted to make sure it showed up correctly on your end too.

    1. Hello Jihyeon. Wow. What a privilege to have met you yesterday. I hope you will feel comfortable reaching out to us if there is something we might be able to help you with in your career or your travels. If you come to the US (North Carolina) you have a home you can stay in during your visit.

I’m loving watching you walk through the towns and the beautiful countryside. I even kept up daily during our family vacation in Ireland last week! The weather there was a dream. Sorry for the extreme temps y’all are enduring right now. Day time high temps are hard … but sleeping in 94 degrees is a different story! Praying for you daily for safety, health and much joy along the way.

    1. We had our third and last really hot day (for now). We broke down and waked an extra 3km to reach a real hotel with a/c. We needed it! Well…..wanted it badly!

I’m glad you had a trip to Erie. It’s a beautiful place. Where did you go?

We spent time in Galway. Did a day trip to the Cliffs of Moher and some other small towns, then spent the end of the week – Tuesday this week in Dublin. As they would say it was great craic! All 6 of us (boys and their girlfriend/fiancé) went which was the best part … just being together for uninterrupted family time. Glad you are done with the extreme heat … and so happy you got to a hotel with a/c. I have to say as I watch your videos and read your blog, I’m often worried about what you are going to eat. Maybe more than you are 🙂 … Funny that’s always my first thought is I hope they had good food today! Maybe it was the presumed cat food you ate early on?? IDK … always makes me happy when I see you’ve eaten well and met good people along the way.

    1. Your trip sounds wonderful. I’ve tried to get some of the kids to come on a trip but the timing hasn’t worked. But I have a plan to rent a caravan here in a coming year and invite each couple and kids to join us for a week. I hope they would come.
None are interested in hiking and maybe this is our last big walk. It’s been different this time for some reason. It’s early yet though.
