Jakobsweg Day5 Kavolina Pes – Nemcovice 12.9mi

Another short post due to no wifi. Actually we have WiFi but it isn’t connected to the internet so…basically useless to us.

We started out this morning with the intent to walk again along the Berounka River to a cool sounding campground called Kemp Reggae. We waked through a nature/wildlife preserve and saw some cool wildlife. Imagine more pictures below!

Zoom in upper left.

So our plan was a fourth night of camping in a row. But everything we had was WET and we sat for breakfast and decided on a new plan.

As you can see on the Maps page, we seem to be way off our path. This is primarily because of the limited lodging in the area and our fruitless search for a vacancy for the following day. Even considering a long 20+ mile day, everything was either booked or unresponsive.

So being the resourceful 21st century pilgrims that we are, we used our smart phones to plan a new route. We ended up booking at a beautiful venue location that sounded wonderful. The route to get there was off Camino of course and being “off Camino” meant a large (not all) chunk of road walking. Ugh.

We had an adventure when Nadine saw a shortcut she wanted to take along a narrow path in the woods. Well that path started to close in a bit and got thick with stinging nettles. Consulting our gps Nadine saw an “out” in a dashed line trail “just” up the ridge. Well that ridge was about 240 feet above us at about 65-70 degree incline. We scrambled up the slope hands and feet, laughing most of the way up. Imagine below a really funny video of us on hands and knees scrambling up a “cliff”.

The rest of the day was uneventful. We had a nice lunch at a small village park and made it to our farm lodging with one last push in the hot sun.

Then it rained and we have yet to get all of our stuff dry. But we are dry AND clean and for that we are very thankful.

One last note about dinner. There is a decent chance that we had cat food for dinner. Seriously. We had bought a large 600g tin of something with the word “lunch” on it. A brief scan of the ingredients indicated it included chicken. We’d bought it because food at Kemp Reggae was unknown.

Well, when we got to our actual destination, it was oddly unstaffed and the attached restaurant was dark. So at dinner time, we sat with some bread and butter and, an open tin of what we are kind of sure was cat food and polished that baby off. Literally 15min later a very kind lady opened up the restaurant and made us a plate of human food (farm fresh meat, pate, bread and cheese). Our stomach’s are somewhat confused at the moment.

Meow!

I wish I could send more pictures and video but WiFi has been more scarce than I’d hoped. Our lodging is at a working farm. Fun animals here including Emu and Boar mixed in with the usual hog, sheep, goats, donkey, horse etc.

Life is good. We are happy and healthy and churning out the kilometers. Today marks one week since landing in Czech Republic. Amazing.

seems like your blaming your sister when we all know you’re the gps guy 🤪😁 just kidding! Are those deer or elk? Hard to tell from how far away they are in the picture.

    1. Oh, I was definitely blaming her. I’m the little brother…it’s my job. 🙂
Elk or some other beastie with broad antlers.
You’d love the working farm where we spent last night. Lots of very talkative animals.

Yes he was and I will take the fall for it! Honestly later on I was happy we had a break from the road even though it almost killed us!!

It was pretty bad. And it was terribly ironic that just a little later we were served a platter of meat and cheeses that were recognizable. It made me think of how God has so many good things for us if we will just wait!!!

I tried to leave a comment yesterday about your cat food! I’m having second thoughts about doing a Camino in the future after hearing this FUNNY story!

    1. Haha. This is our first experience out of five Pilgrimages that we’ve consumed pet food. Well, as far as we know anyway!! 🙂
In general, the food is one of the great attractions about walking on Pilgrimage. Normally it is quite good and as a pilgrim burning thousands of calories a day, you can have as much as you want!!

It probably was just potted meat but it smelled like cat food and tasted awful.
I wanted to tell you I had the privilege of talking with and praying with a Ukrainian young woman the first Sunday in Prague! I thought of you and all your work with the Ukrainian families. What a joy!!
