Jakobsweg Day63 Salgesch-Conthey 17.39mi

We woke up at 6am in the dark (we all remembered the 5am sunrises 63 days ago in Prague). We packed under the light of our phones and dragged our stuff under a light near to the bathhouse at the campground.

There, we basically repacked because things weren’t in the right place, and we also ate a quick breakfast of a hard boiled egg and dried apple. Yum??

We set out for the days walk within an hour of waking which isn’t bad for having to break camp and eat.

Our walk started how it ended yesterday on pavement and flat. But I’d intentionally inserted some detours up into the vineyards that cover the hills on the north bank of the Rhône River (the north bank faces south and thus provides a longer growing season).

Vineyards abound

Those detours provided some short but steep climbs and also gave some nice views of the valley below. We gleaned more than our fair share of fully ripe grapes. They were soooo sweet!

We stopped for a late-ish lunch of tuna fish, three-day-old rolls, and some potato chips. Doesn’t this menu selection make your mouth water? Seriously guys when you are hungry, it really doesn’t matter.

High up in the vineyards the path (the Chemin du Vinobles) there is a channel of water which is kept high for as long as possible. It makes a beautiful stream.

After lunch we stopped at one of the many wine cellars for a wine tasting. Why? Well, when else were we going to be able to taste Swiss wines, on a hill overlooking the Rhône River with a castle in the foreground.

Wine tasting

Our afternoon included some gentle downhill bits as we scaled down the hills.

The last 8km (2hrs) was head-down along a busy road, but it was ok because we were headed to a family-owned B&B – a nice change from our two nights of tent camping.

Our laundry was done by the BnB owner.  What a luxury!   We strolled through the rain to a small gas station grocery store which is the only thing open on Sundays.  We purchased  some pasta, sauce, and a fresh green salad for dinner! Cooking for ourselves is so special.  …and much cheaper!

Since I was unable to load videos for a few days here is a quick compilation.
