Jakobsweg Day3 Beroun-Roztoky 18.6+ day

Short post today for several reasons.

  • No WiFi
  • Low Battery
  • Tired legs and all other body parts.

What’s worse than a 15mi day? A 15mi day that turns into a 18.6mi plus day. So much to say but so little opportunity to post.

Short summary:

Left a little late after tenting last night.

Stopped at Nizbor for coffee and visit to castle. Gave away first Arrow to Anna who was dear to us. Experienced the “miracle of the passport” shortly thereafter.

Miracle:

There is no reason for us to have visited the castle at Nizbor. While there we met two receptionists at the desk and got a stamp. They insisted we wait (for reasons unknown to us). They brought us. Anna who spoke excellent English. She was very kind and wanted a picture. She asked for a copy of the picture. Exchanged WhatsApp numbers. I felt led to give her our first arrow. Gave her the good news which she heard. Leave that one with God. Left and walked 1km. At 1km I stopped to go to Airplane mode to save battery. Just before turning it off I received a call from Anna. I’d left my passport at the desk. Relieved/Embarrassed, I walked half way back. She met me. I told her Nichts ist Zufall (Nothing is Random) and asked her to think about why we met again. I claim this as a miracle. God worked in this situation in a supernatural way. Many would claim coincidence but it just happens too often to be random.

Met Jan and Hannah at an overlook.

Met Maryanna at the same overlook and met her family. She was so sweet and meeting her babička (grandmother) was fun.

Leaving the overlook saw sign for 10km more to go when we’d expected only 5km. Ugh.

Arrived at campsite for the night. It’s a primitive one with outhouses and no electricity or wifi.

Saw local pronghorn antelope, water snake and otter.

Wonderful dinner added yet another 1mi to the day.

We are tired and hurting but alive and happy.

More later when I can.

I’m praying for you again but am usually a 1/2 day late. I’m enjoying following your journey. Trusting you have a restful day.

I’d love to hear about the arrows.- I don’t know the back story on these.

“For you are my hiding place; you protect me from trouble. You surround me with songs of victory. Interlude The Lord says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you.”

    ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭32‬:‭7‬-‭8‬ ‭NLT‬‬

      Re The arrows:
Allison and I have always brought a tiny gift to give to people that have been of great help to us or to whom we’ve been able to help in some way. In the past we have brought small wooden crosses. On our London to Rome walk we brought small skeleton keys (a symbol of Peter and hence Rome). This year we opted for Camino Arrows.
On the Camino in Spain the primary symbol is the scallop shell representing James the Greater (Big James). Another symbol is the yellow arrow which guides you along the way. The yellow arrow is a way maker and guide for all of the Camino routes.
We use each of these gifts as a way to connect with those special people. They are an opening of conversation that we use evangelically. Something like this….roughly….Here is a gift. It is a yellow arrow like the one that guides our pilgrimage path. In Spain these are everywhere pointing you in the right direction. But here on the Czech and German and Swiss and French portions the yellow arrow is absent or rare. I want to give you this gift to let you know that there is a way maker that will never leave you.” We then take the conversation however far we are allowed. Sometimes this leads nowhere, but at least we planted a seed. But sometimes, those amazingly special times, you can enter into a real conversation and go deep. Also sometimes you meet and establish a connection with a brother/sister and your eternal destiny is revealed.
Please ask more if you’d like any other info or more details.

Thank you Connie! I love the scripture… He’s definitely leading us as we’re “off-Camino” several times due to avoiding 20 miles plus day. I think 15 miles seems to be the sweet spot for us! Thanks for following!!
